The Court of Appeal has ruled that politician Mohamed Kamarainba Mansaray libelled businessman Kobi Walker and must pay NLe 250,000 in damages along with NLe 50,000 in legal costs.

Delivering judgment, Appeal’s Court Justice A.T. Ganda held that an audio message authored and circulated by Kamarainba on WhatsApp and other social media platforms on 2 February 2025 constituted defamation against Walker.

“This Court declares that the audio recording concerning the Plaintiff (Kobi Walker) authored and published by the Defendant (Kamarainba) amounts to libel,” Justice Ganda stated in his ruling.

In addition to the financial penalties, the Court ordered Kamarainba to publish a written retraction and apology in three widely circulated national newspapers. He must also remove all related audio recordings, posts, and written statements about Walker from Facebook, WhatsApp, and any other online accounts.

To prevent similar actions in the future, the Court issued a perpetual injunction barring Kamarainba and his associates from creating or disseminating defamatory content about Walker in any form.

Walker described the ruling as a “victory for justice,” saying it sent a clear message against online defamation and protected the aspirations of future generations.

The decision highlights Sierra Leone’s judiciary’s increasing readiness to address defamation cases linked to social media and to enforce accountability for harmful online publications.
