Sierra Leone’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay, Esq, has urged Sierra Leoneans to prioritize national cohesion as the country advances in implementing the National Unity Agreement. His remarks came shortly after the government fulfilled its commitment to Resolution 4 of the agreement with the recent release of political prisoners.

Resolution 4 of the National Unity Agreement focuses on fostering peace, reconciliation, and inclusivity by addressing political grievances, including the detention of individuals held on politically related charges. The release of these prisoners, which happened earlier this week at is seen as a symbolic gesture toward strengthening dialogue and reducing political tensions in the country.

Mr. Sesay noted that the move should not be viewed merely as a government concession but as an opportunity for Sierra Leoneans to rebuild trust and work together in the spirit of unity. He stressed that the responsibility of sustaining peace does not rest solely on government but requires the collective commitment of all citizens.

The National Unity Agreement, signed earlier this year, is a roadmap aimed at bridging divisions and fostering long-term national stability. With the release of political prisoners, the government has signaled its willingness to honor its obligations under the Agreement, while urging the public to play its part in building a cohesive and peaceful Sierra Leone.
