The Sierra Leone Bakers’ Union Chairman, Imam Chernor Saadu Jalloh and other Bakers have informed the public that due to the scarcity of bread flour in the country, some members will not be able to process bread on Monday 10 April and will lay down their tools.
In an interview with Awoko newspaper, the Chairman said at present, only Pee Cee & Son is supplying flour at a quantity of one thousand (1000) per day across the country.
He however said that they have not been baking bread of late due to the shortage and cost of bread flour.
He disclosed that on Monday when some bakers will be laying down their tools, there will be a meeting to critically discuss the challenges of the Union.
“Almost every day bakers come to me to help them get bread flour. They told me they had gone to various suppliers and flour is very difficult to get now and could not tell what will happen in the next coming days,” he said.
He disclosed that the cost for bread flour at the black market is NLe1,500 and NLe1,400 per 50kg bag. The normal sale before was NLe800 for a 50kg bag.
