The Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA) has retracted its earlier congratulatory message to the newly appointed Chief Electoral Commissioner, clarifying that the constitutional process for the appointment remains incomplete.

In a press statement issued on February 22, 2026, the association announced that it was withdrawing its previous release dated February 21, in which it had congratulated the Commissioner following consultations with political parties.

The SLBA noted that it had closely monitored discussions involving leaders of all political parties and acknowledged that 12 out of the 14 registered political parties conveyed their approval, leading to the appointment pursuant to Section 32(3) of the Constitution of Sierra Leone Act No. 6 of 1991.

However, the association emphasized that the constitutional process is not yet finalized.

“The Sierra Leone Bar Association emphasized that the constitutional process is not yet complete. The Association stated that it is awaiting the decision of Parliament, as required by law, and urged lawmakers to strictly adhere to due process,” the statement read.

The SLBA clarified that the February 22 release supersedes its earlier statement issued on February 21, 2026, effectively withdrawing the congratulatory message extended to the Commissioner.

The association reaffirmed that it remains seized of the matter and will continue to follow developments closely as the appointment proceeds to Parliament for consideration.

The statement was signed by General Secretary Alfred Ad Juwan, Esq., and closed with the association’s motto, “Fiat Justitia” – Latin for “Let justice be done.”
