On the sidelines of the World Without Hunger Conference, Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio and Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed met to explore opportunities for deepening collaboration in agriculture, economic growth, and infrastructural development.

The discussions aimed to leverage shared strengths and explore avenues for mutual progress, particularly in boosting agricultural productivity and enhancing economic ties between the two nations.

President Bio acknowledged Ethiopia’s agricultural achievements under Prime Minister Abiy’s leadership, particularly the country’s successful transformation in wheat production and poultry farming.

He emphasized the importance of learning from Ethiopia’s experience to strengthen Sierra Leone’s agricultural sector, with a focus on food security and sustainable farming practices.

The leaders discussed strategies to align industrial growth with agricultural development, especially in agro-processing, to add value to raw materials and create more job opportunities in their respective countries.

In their talks, Prime Minister Abiy highlighted the critical role of infrastructure in advancing agricultural and industrial growth.

He reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to expanding its aviation links with Sierra Leone through Ethiopian Airlines, which would increase flight frequencies to Freetown. This move is expected to foster stronger trade ties, promote tourism, and encourage cultural exchanges between the two nations.

President Bio expressed his admiration for Ethiopia’s innovative approach to agriculture and industrial development, noting that Sierra Leone stands to benefit greatly from the shared knowledge and collaboration.

“Prime Minister Abiy’s vision for agricultural transformation is one we hope to replicate in Sierra Leone. By working together, we can achieve food security and ensure sustainable economic growth for our people,” he stated.

The meeting also touched on broader regional cooperation, with President Bio praising Ethiopia’s leadership in addressing key continental issues. Both leaders reiterated their commitment to deepening diplomatic and economic relations, viewing this engagement as a stepping stone toward greater collaboration across key sectors.

As the discussions concluded, the two leaders reaffirmed their shared determination to build stronger partnerships that promote economic development, regional stability, and prosperity.
