The United States Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Bryan Hunt, has stepped down from his position to support his family during a critical health situation, according to information shared by multiple sources.

Sources close to the former ambassador confirmed to Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden of the Awareness Times that Hunt’s father recently underwent a serious heart operation and is being discharged from hospital. Hunt’s mother is said to need immediate emotional and practical support as the family manages his father’s recovery.

“That said, a number of personal factors, including my father’s unexpected triple bypass surgery last week, necessitate that I be closer to home in Virgina at this time, “he stated.

Hunt stated his father’s bypass surgery as factor in his decision to return back home.

Embassy sources have also verified the authenticity of a text message reportedly sent by the ambassador, indicating that “family comes first” in his decision to resign.

Following Hunt’s resignation, Deputy Ambassador Jared Yancey has assumed the role of Acting Head of the U.S. Mission in Sierra Leone.

Hunt’s departure highlights the personal and sometimes unforeseen circumstances that can shape the careers of public officials, underscoring the importance of family commitments even at high levels of diplomacy.
