Magistrate Sahr Kekura of the Freetown Magistrate Court No.1 has warned Freetown City Council (FCC) police officers not to carry out demolitions without the presence of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP).

The warning came during a court session where three FCC officers were charged with disorderly conduct.

The officers, Sulaiman Bangura, Amid Jalloh, and Hawa Mohamed Bangura, were involved in the incident. However, due to Hawa Mohamed Bangura’s absence, the charge could not be read to the two officers present. Prosecutor ASP Ibrahim Mansaray requested a bench warrant for the third accused, which Magistrate Kekura granted.

During the hearing, Magistrate Kekura asked FCC Inspector Kabba Conteh whether the officers had received a court order for the demolition. Conteh replied that he wasn’t aware of any order but confirmed they had requested support from the Sierra Leone Police. Despite not waiting for a response from the SLP, the FCC officers went ahead with the demolition.

Magistrate Kekura told the court that any demolition must involve police support, as the FCC police have limited authority. He also pointed out that even if the FCC had authorized the officers to act, they should have made sure to get the SLP’s support. The Magistrate added that if the proper procedures had been followed, the officers wouldn’t be facing charges in court.

The two officers present were remanded in custody, and the case was adjourned to March 28, 2025, for further proceedings.
