Choithram Memorial Hospital (CMH), in partnership with INTERPLAST Germany, has concluded its fourth free reconstructive surgery camp, providing specialized consultations and surgeries to patients across Sierra Leone.

The two-week program, held from 10–24 February at CMH in Freetown, offered plastic and reconstructive surgeries for conditions such as cleft lip and palate, post-burn contractures, hand, foot, and wrist deformities, and tumors affecting the extremities.

The visiting team of German specialists included plastic and hand surgeons, anesthetists, and nursing staff. During the 2026 outreach, 44 patients received surgical procedures at no cost. Since the program began, around 200 patients have benefited.

Dr. Gowrinath M. George, CMH Medical Superintendent, said the initiative improves patients’ quality of life by restoring function and reducing disability. Patients register through public announcements and screening by hospital clinicians, with follow-up care provided locally after surgeries.

Dr. Bernd Markus Heidemann of INTERPLAST Germany highlighted the technical challenges of reconstructive surgery, especially for children with burn injuries or cleft conditions, noting the social and functional impact of these procedures.

Dr. George also announced upcoming outreach programs, including a Colon Cancer Screening Camp starting 12 March and a Cataract Surgery Camp beginning 21 March, both emphasizing training and capacity-building for local medical staff.
