A festive Athletic Sports Meet at Abbako Technical College turned tragic on Friday 9 January, 2026 after a Year Two HTC secondary student, Abdul Sesay of Red Hall, collapsed shortly after completing a relay race and was later pronounced dead at the Port Loko Government Hospital.

According to eyewitnesses, The incident occurred during the 4×800 metres medley relay when Sesay, having successfully handed over the baton, suddenly fell to the ground moments after leaving the track. On-site medical personnel and sports officials immediately administered first aid and attempted resuscitation before he was rushed by okada to the government hospital, where doctors later confirmed his death.

The sudden incident brought the sports meet to an abrupt halt, silencing what had moments earlier been a lively celebration filled with cheers, music and competition. Students, staff and spectators looked on in shock as the atmosphere shifted from excitement to grief.

According to fellow students, Sesay had appeared healthy and in high spirits before the race. He was described as a committed student and enthusiastic athlete who volunteered to represent his hall and was warmly encouraged by his peers.
The Port Loko Police have opened an inquiry into the death, in line with standard procedure, while a post-mortem examination is expected to determine the exact cause.

The Abbako Technical College community and residents of Port Loko remain united in mourning the loss of a young life, remembering Abdul Sesay as a promising student whose death cast a dark shadow over a day meant for celebration.
