Sierra Leone’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Rtd AIG Morie Lengor Esq., has officially launched the construction of additional detention cells at the Sierra Leone Correctional Service (SLCS) Male Correctional Centre on Pademba Road.
The sod turning ceremony was held on Thursday, February 6, 2025.
Minister Lengor emphasized the importance of the new cell block, highlighting the government’s initiative to decongest correctional facilities and President Julius Maada Bio’s commitment to human capital development.
He also stated that the government plans to relocate the Pademba Road facility to a more suitable location, as the current site is not ideal for a maximum-security correctional center. The Minister urged the contractor to ensure quality construction, promising thorough monitoring of the project.
SLCS Director General, John Senesie, explained that the proposed construction of forty cell blocks at the Pademba Road facility aims to address the pressing issue of overcrowding. He added that further plans are in development to build additional facilities and alleviate overcrowding across the correctional system.
