Africell Sierra Leone, in an effort to enhance digital inclusion nationwide, has partnered with Media Matters for Women (MMW) to provide digital skills training to over 300 schoolgirls and female entrepreneurs across rural communities in Sierra Leone.

The initiative, known as the Digitruck Salone Project, aims to enhance digital inclusion across the Sierra Leone.

Funded by Close the Gap through the Internet Society Foundation, the project utilizes a 40-foot shipping container transformed into a solar-powered mobile classroom. The classroom, upon reaching its beneficiaries, travelled across underserved areas, including the Western Area Rural District, Bombali, and Kenema.

Alinah Oliet Kallon, Manager of the Digitruck Salone Project, revealed that the initiative has benefited 308 schoolgirls and 31 female entrepreneurs so far. “With the help of Africell and other partners, we are able to achieve our goal of empowering girls with digital tools to enhance their learning and help women grow their businesses,” Kallon stated.

Report confirmed that the key focus of the program is on imparting practical digital literacy skills while also addressing the gender gap in access to technology, particularly in remote regions.

During a recent event, Africell’s Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Joe Abass Bangura, reflected on his personal journey from humble beginnings to a corporate leadership position. He emphasized the importance of education and technology in transforming lives, saying, “Every child has the potential to change their world. What they need is access and opportunity.”

Bangura commended MMW and its partners for their efforts to narrow the digital divide. He reaffirmed Africell’s commitment to community upliftment and empowering the next generation, stating, “We believe in the power of partnerships to create meaningful change. Projects like Digitruck are not just about technology; they are about hope, growth, and a better future.”

Africell has a history of supporting similar initiatives, including nationwide coding boot camps and mobile computer labs aimed at empowering youth.

As the Digitruck Salone Project continues its journey into the local communities, Africell’s involvement has underscored its dedication to social impact and inclusive development in Sierra Leone.
