The Ministry of Energy, in collaboration with the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA), has announced the implementation of a structured electricity supply night schedule for Freetown. This measure comes in response to the current decrease in production from the Bumbuna hydroelectric facility and limitations in electricity supplied from other sources.
According to the Ministry, the schedule is designed to ensure equitable distribution of the available electricity across six designated service areas in the capital. The areas are as follows:
• Central: Savage Square – St. John
• East: Upgun – Jui
• Far East: Jui – Waterloo
• Mountain Rural: Wilberforce – Bathurst
• West: Congo Cross – Lumley Regent Road
• Far West: Juba – Sussex
The night schedule will run from Monday, 16th March to Sunday, 22nd March 2026, with alternating supply across the service areas. The rotation plan ensures that while some communities experience electricity supply during the night; others will be without, thereby balancing the limited generation capacity.
Officials emphasized that this arrangement is a temporary measure aimed at managing the current shortfall while efforts continue to stabilize and expand electricity production.
The Ministry of Energy and EDSA assured the public of their commitment to restoring reliable electricity supply and encouraged residents to take note of the schedule for effective planning during the week.
This announcement underscores the ongoing challenges in Sierra Leone’s energy sector, while also highlighting the government’s efforts to maintain fairness and transparency in the distribution of power during periods of reduced supply.
