The Environment Protection Agency (EPA) Sierra Leone, during the inaugural Sierra Leone Mining Week 2025, held at the Freetown International Conference Centre in Aberdeen, earnestly advocated for Climate-Compatible Mining for sustainable development in the country.
The event, organized by the Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources and the National Mineral Agency, focused on the agency’s initiatives regarding mining, climate change, and the economic impacts of illegal mining.
During the week-long event, the EPA showcased its role as the primary environmental regulatory body, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with the mining sector. The partnership aimed to facilitate a transition to climate-compatible mining, which is seen as essential for inclusive and sustainable development.
At the EPA’s booth, a variety of information, communication, and education materials highlighted the agency’s public education initiatives and its approach to environmental governance and management. The booth garnered attention from President Bio, government ministers, and members of the public who expressed interest in the agency’s initiatives.
The Executive Chairman of the EPA, Dr. Abu-Bakar S. Massaquoi, also took part in a notable session titled “The Role of the EPA in Regulating Mining Companies on Compliance in the Fight Against Climate Change.” In his comments, he stressed the need for sustainable practices in the exploitation of natural resources.
“As we lead important discussions on the future of mining in our country, we recognize that sustainability, inclusivity, and collaboration are essential for fostering collective leadership in this field,” Dr. Massaquoi stated.
The urgency of addressing the current global crisis highlighted the necessity for cooperation and engagement within the mining sector. The EPA expresses its commitment to the transition to climate-compatible mining, viewing it as a fundamental accelerator of equitable and sustainable development.
As the event concluded, stakeholders shared optimism about the advancements in mining practices in Sierra Leone, marking a significant step towards achieving sustainable development goals in the industry.
