Ethiopia has formally requested Sierra Leone’s endorsement for its candidate to lead the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL). The appeal was made during a diplomatic meeting in Accra on Thursday.
The Deputy Head of Mission of Ethiopia in Ghana, Ambassador Asaye Alemayehu Dejjenie, presented the request during a courtesy visit to Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner, Mohamed Hassan Kaisamba. The meeting highlighted the strong bilateral relations between the two African nations.
Ambassador Dejjenie emphasized the importance of African countries supporting each other’s development initiatives. He recalled Ethiopia’s previous backing of Sierra Leone’s successful bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council as an example of their history of mutual support.
In response, High Commissioner Kaisamba welcomed the Ethiopian delegation and praised the longstanding ties between the countries. He acknowledged Ethiopia’s role as a strategic hub for the continent and affirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to exploring deeper cooperation, including in trade.
Staff from the Sierra Leone High Commission, including Minister Counsellor Aiah Edwin Mbawa and First Secretary Samuel Landford, were also present. They assured Ambassador Dejjenie that his request would be formally coordinated with Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Ethiopia has nominated Commissioner General Demekash Gebremichael Weldyes, the Chief of the Ethiopian Federal Police, for the position. The election for the next Secretary-General of INTERPOL will be held at the 93rd INTERPOL General Assembly in Marrakech, Morocco, scheduled for November 24–27, 2025.
