Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, on Tuesday welcomed a high-level delegation from Uterine Health Nigeria, a coalition of organizations and individuals championing the rights and health of women, with a strong focus on menstrual hygiene and uterine health.

The courtesy visit took place at the First Lady’s Goderich Office in Freetown and was led by Ms. Fatou Wurie, Chief Executive Officer of Uterine Health. The team is in Sierra Leone ahead of the official launch of the Uterine Health Fund, scheduled for July 25, 2025.

Discussions centered around building strategic partnerships and raising awareness on uterine health a critical but often overlooked area of women’s health.

“As First Lady and President of the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), I remain deeply committed to protecting and empowering women and girls,” Mrs. Bio stated. “This includes leading the charge against period poverty and ensuring menstrual hygiene is prioritized as a fundamental health and human rights issue.”

She expressed enthusiasm about being at the forefront of the campaign to promote uterine health, describing the visit as timely and impactful.

The First Lady was also presented with a book on uterine health, which she said further solidified her resolve to continue advocating for women’s health and well-being across the continent.

The launch of the Uterine Health Fund later this week is expected to mark a significant step forward in addressing reproductive health challenges and enhancing support systems for women and girls in Sierra Leone and beyond.
