On November 18, 2024, Her Excellency Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, the First Lady of Sierra Leone, will lead the national observance of World Day for Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse.
The annual event, recognized globally, provides a critical platform to raise awareness and foster dialogue about the urgent need to protect children from sexual abuse and exploitation.
Dr. Bio, a staunch advocate for children’s rights, has long been at the forefront of efforts to combat abuse and promote the welfare of vulnerable children, particularly girls.
This year’s commemoration, held in Freetown, will highlight the necessity for coordinated action both within Sierra Leone and worldwide to address the ongoing crisis of child sexual abuse. As First Lady, Dr. Bio has worked tirelessly to influence policy change, raise awareness, and implement preventive measures aimed at safeguarding the nation’s children.
Through her impactful “Hands Off Our Girls” campaign, she has drawn significant attention to the issue, advocating for stronger legal protections and support systems for survivors of abuse.
The event will bring together government officials, child rights activists, community leaders, and survivors to share experiences, discuss strategies, and renew their commitment to protecting children.
In her keynote address, Dr. Bio is expected to emphasize the importance of a unified approach, stressing that preventing child sexual abuse requires the active involvement of all sectors of society—from families and educators to law enforcement and policymakers.
As part of the commemoration, a range of activities will take place, including speeches, educational workshops, and sessions designed to equip communities with the tools they need to prevent and report child sexual abuse. The event will also honor individuals and organizations that have made exceptional contributions to child protection.
