Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Fatima Bio has donated 1 Billion Leones towards the development of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) Women’s Wing. The announcement was made as a “token of continued support” following a powerful demonstration of women’s unity within the ruling party.

The First Lady expressed her profound appreciation after witnessing the SLPP Women’s Council “exemplify the transformative power of women’s unity.” She highlighted that women from across Sierra Leone had converged to express their singular, heartfelt appreciation for President  Julius Maada Bio’s groundbreaking women empowerment initiatives and the evolution of the Office of the First Lady.

Bio described the display of solidarity as a “testament to the power of women,” which she firmly believes “will secure a landslide victory for SLPP in 2028.” This statement firmly positions the Women’s Wing as a crucial force in the party’s political strategy.

The First Lady is recognised for her strong advocacy for women and girls, notably through her flagship “Hands Off Our Girls” campaign. Furthermore, President Bio’s administration is credited with enacting the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) Act 2022, which aims for at least 30% women’s representation in decision-making positions.

During the ceremony, the First Lady extended her “sincere gratitude” to the Women’s Leader, Hawa Foray, her deputy, Fatmata Kamara, and all zonal and regional women leaders for their “tireless efforts.” She also personally thanked President Bio for his “exemplary leadership.”

The One Billion Leones donation, made on behalf of her husband, the President, is intended to support the continued development and activities of the SLPP women’s wing. The First Lady, often acknowledged for her influential role within the party, continues to leverage her platform to advocate for gender equality and empowerment in Sierra Leone.
