Sierra Leone will launch a nationwide Ebola vaccination campaign from Thursday, December 5, to Sunday, December 15, 2024.

The campaign, aimed at safeguarding the country’s frontline workers, introduces a single-dose Ebola vaccine, known as the Ebola Marklate, which is safe, effective, and free of charge.

Frontline workers, who are most at risk of exposure during outbreaks, are the primary focus of the vaccination drive.

The targeted groups include healthcare workers, community health workers (CHWs), traditional healers, Okada/bike riders, and security personnel such as military, police, and immigration officers.

The introduction of the Ebola Marklate underscores Sierra Leone’s proactive efforts to strengthen its public health defenses against potential Ebola outbreaks. By prioritizing high-risk groups, the campaign aims to reduce the vulnerability of key sectors and ensure their safety as they serve on the frontlines of healthcare and public service.

Officials from the Ministry of Health and Sanitation have assured the public of the vaccine’s safety and efficacy, emphasizing its critical role in protecting individuals and communities from the devastating impacts of Ebola.

They encourage all eligible frontline workers to take advantage of the vaccination campaign during the rollout period.
