The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs commemorated International Women’s Day across five chiefdoms in Kambia District through community town hall engagements aimed at promoting the rights and protection of women and girls.
The activities were held in the chiefdoms of Samu, Mambolo, Munu Thalla, Magbema, and Briamaia under the global theme “Rights. Justice. Action: For All Women and Girls.”
The engagements brought together key stakeholders, including Foday Yumkella, Paramount Chiefs, district authorities, women’s leaders, youth representatives, and development partners.
Participants used the occasion to reaffirm their collective commitment to advancing gender equality, protecting children, and ending gender-based violence in communities across the district.

Welcoming participants in Munu Thalla Chiefdom, Paramount Chief Bai Nani Kabath II commended the Ministry and its partners for bringing the celebration closer to rural communities.
He used the platform to strongly condemn harmful practices such as early marriage and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), describing them as major obstacles to the safety and development of women and girls.
The Paramount Chief further pledged to work closely with section chiefs and community headmen to introduce bylaws that will protect girls under the age of 18 and ensure that individuals who violate these rights are held accountable.
Community members also voiced strong support for the initiative. Youth representatives described women as the driving force behind community and national development, while women leaders expressed appreciation for the opportunity to better understand their rights and responsibilities.

Several participants called for sustained engagement, noting that continued collaboration between government institutions, traditional authorities, and development partners will be key to strengthening women’s empowerment and reducing gender-based violence.
The town hall meetings created an important platform for dialogue, awareness, and community commitment toward building safer and more inclusive communities for women and girls.
The commemoration in Kambia District marked another step toward advancing gender justice, while reinforcing the collective resolve of community leaders and stakeholders to uphold the rights, dignity, and empowerment of all women and girls.
