The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice has discontinued the criminal proceedings against former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, bringing an end to the case that had been before the courts.

According to a public notice issued by the Office of the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, the Attorney-General filed a notice to discontinue the proceedings pursuant to Section 45 of the Criminal Procedure Act, 2024.

Former President Koroma had been charged with offences relating to treason and misprision of treason and was granted bail on medical grounds.

The Attorney-General stated that the decision was made in the exercise of the powers vested in the office under the laws of Sierra Leone. With the filing of the notice, the proceedings have been discontinued, and the former President’s bail has ceased with immediate effect.

The notice further stated that Dr. Koroma is free to return to Sierra Leone upon completion of his medical treatment or at any time of his choosing.

Dr. Koroma served as President of Sierra Leone from 2007 to 2018.
