The Government of Sierra Leone has formally launched its first Mental Health Champions Network within the country.

This initiative was done under the leadership of President Julius Maada Bio, and it is to enhance the government’s commitment to enhancing mental health services while also raising awareness about mental health concerns across the country.

The Mental Health Champions Network is made up of 20 people who have been chosen for their contributions to mental health advocacy, community leadership, and youth development. These individuals have proven amazing skills in their professional personal, and communal life, and they are drawn by a desire to improve mental health care in Sierra Leone.

The Mental Health Champions will be responsible for advocating for mental health, supporting the government’s ongoing mental health agenda, and promoting legislative and policy reforms which address mental health issues in the country.

Their work is said to play a critical role in advancing the mental health discussion and help enhancing a supportive environment for those affected by mental health challenges.

This launch is said to be an important step in boosting the government’s initiatives to address mental health difficulties, raise awareness, and build a supportive society for Sierra Leoneans dealing with mental health issues.

The Mental Health Champions will work with different stakeholders, such as local communities, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, and foreign partners, to improve mental health services throughout Sierra Leone.
