The Petroleum Regulatory Agency (PRA) of Sierra Leone has announced updated fuel prices for August 2024, effective from today, 5th August. This adjustment follows a rise in global petroleum prices and a slight depreciation of the Leone against the US dollar.
According to the PRA’s press release, global market prices for petroleum products have increased due to higher demand during the summer period. The Leone experienced a minor decline of 0.43% against the USD in July, from NLe23.28 to NLe23.38.
The release also notes an under-recovery of NLe0.36 for petrol, which has been addressed through a price correction levy. Additionally, a debt recovery levy will recover NLe0.97 for petrol and NLe0.24 for diesel to stabilize prices.
The approved pump prices for August 2024 are as follows:
- Petrol: NLe28.50 per litre
- Diesel: NLe28.50 per litre
- Kerosene: NLe27.49 per litre
- Fuel Oil: NLe25.89 per litre
These prices will remain in effect until further notice from the PRA.

The question that needs to be investigated is this – Is price fixing (by the Government) a good thing? Should we leave the market to regulate itself. The answer should be based on good research and data. I believe it should not be the job of PRA to fix prices but to provide policies and a regulatory framework.
Sierraloaded is too childish

You ask a good question. This is silliness on the part of the government. They are trying to make it look like they are helping, but they are not. Importers pay a price for fuel, pay to ship it, inland costs and they have to make a profit, all of which government has to be mindful of. Just have rules in place that prevents the consumer getting taken advantage of and let the market set prices. Today they are raising prices, next month they may be cutting, because in the 30 days to today, oil is down over 10%, so do they play games again next month? Private industry should not have prices set for them like this, unless they are raping the people.
