The Government of Sierra Leone has announced the official relaunch of the national telecommunications operator, Sierratel, following a new private sector partnership aimed at revitalising the company and strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure.
The announcement was made after a strategic meeting involving Sierratel staff and the Ministry of Employment, during which the Minister of Communication, Technology and Innovation confirmed that an agreement has been reached to reposition Sierratel under a modern and sustainable operating model.
As part of the initial phase of the relaunch, an advance payment of 2 million US dollars will be disbursed to begin settling staff liabilities. The total outstanding obligations to employees are estimated at approximately 6.3 million US dollars, a move government officials say is intended to support workers and stabilise operations within the company.

According to the Ministry of Communication, Technology and Innovation, the relaunch marks a significant step toward restoring Sierratel’s operational capacity, protecting national telecommunications assets, improving service delivery, and building a more resilient and future-ready telecom sector.
Officials have described the development as the beginning of a new phase for both Sierratel and Sierra Leone’s broader digital transformation agenda, with expectations that the private sector partnership will enhance efficiency, innovation, and long-term sustainability in the telecommunications industry.
