The Government of Guinea has issued an official statement regarding the arrest of Sierra Leonean security officers who allegedly entered Guinean territory without authorization.
In Communiqué No. 001/2026 released by the General Staff of the Armed Forces on Tuesday, 24 February 2026, Guinean authorities stated that the incident occurred on Sunday, 22 February 2026, in the district of Koudaya, Sub-Prefecture of Sandénia, Prefecture of Faranah. According to the statement, several dozen armed Sierra Leonean soldiers crossed approximately 1.4 kilometres into Guinean territory, where they reportedly set up a tent and raised their national flag.
The communiqué indicated that Guinean Armed Forces were immediately deployed to the location after receiving an alert. Upon arrival, they confirmed the presence of the Sierra Leonean personnel and arrested sixteen officers, seizing their equipment. The detained officers and confiscated materials were subsequently handed over to the judicial police for further investigation.
The Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Army Corps General Ibrahima Sory Bangoura, commended the Guinean units involved for what he described as their prompt response and professionalism.
The statement also called on Guinea’s Defence and Security Forces to strengthen vigilance and remain on alert to safeguard the country’s territorial integrity.
The development adds to ongoing tensions surrounding the border area, with authorities on both sides expected to address the matter through official channels.

May Allah continue to bless us with peace ✌️ and freedom.
Our 🇸🇱 government is so weak.
This thing must not be solve by diplomacy, you see their explanations, sierra leone we have to wake up, even if Iran can withstand America who’s sierra leone not to withstand Guinea, all the time diplomacy, diplomacy we are tired to here this word, first of all we the people of sierra leone have to unite to do whatever the government says, about withstanding bullying from those idiots Guineans,I do believe we sierra leoneans want peace all the time with Guinea but they don’t want it. Make I shock you, no matter how how soft we may look to them, they will never respect us, they will always treat us like their enemies, because I know what I’m saying,I have lived with them and I know how they treated us,from their talks you can really see the pride in them. How can our mighty soldiers treated like this, I really felt it,it really touched every meaningful citizen of this country.
Take the lead we’re behind you
Dis na big dorti slap na di fake rtd. Brigadier Maada Bio e face….
This show how weak the government of Sierra Leone and its institutions led by the commander in chief.
Please my fellow citizens of Sierra Leone let ask God for his protection because our present government can’t do that at all, Sierra Leone where are we now,we can’t face our na burning country Man to Man, AAA salon.
Most people were expecting President Bio to give order and declare war on Guinea but no.
We went through 11yrs of war and we know exactly what we lost. Sometimes diplomacy is the solution.
In as much as we don’t want to go into war with anyone we should also be vigilant. Our soldiers need to take this episode as a wake-up call to them.
Bio needs to add more weapons in order to strengthen our soldiers.
Sierraleone is the most peaceful country in West Africa but we need to be ready at all times.
Greetings my Kerene District Political Forum and Tambaka Political Forum Family.

Let me seize this opportunity to shed light on the professionalism exercised by both the Guinean Army and Sierra Leonean Soldiers during this incident at “Koudaya, Sub-Prefecture of Sandénia, Prefecture of Faranah,” as reported by Guinean military authorities or Kaliyereh as reported by Sierra Leonean authorities.
I am writing specially in response to an article and contributions made on a Sierra Leonean Newspaper, “Sierraloaded, captioned: “Guinea Authorities Confirm Detention of 16 Sierra Leone Security Officers, published on24 February, 2026. Attached is the link to the publication.
Until one is familiar and knowledgeable of these locations, it would be difficult to enter argument of geographical accuracy that might determine the legal authority that granted Guinean Military action, and whether or not such action was based on a determination to intimidate Sierra Leone or, if in fact, the incident on February 22nd and 23rd, 2026, has any bearing on the “Yenga border dispute” between Guinean and Sierra Leone, a dispute that has been ongoing about twenty years, haven roots in Guinea’s effort to defend their borders and aid to the repellant of rebels during Sierra Leone’s Civil War from 1991 to 2002.
In light of this ambiguity, I would like to focus on the professionalism exercised by both the Sierra Leonean soldiers and their Guinean counterparts during the arrest of the sixteen soldiers and their subsequent release yesterday, Friday, February 27, 2026.
Let me emphasize that Africa cannot be resolving their disputes through conflicts. We are members of ECOWAS, MANO River Union and the United Nations, where conflict resolution mechanisms have been agreed upon and adopted. This resent situation of named dates should follow these diplomatic agreements that both countries are signatories to.
Various African and global conflicts have been resolved through courts or Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms or through the International Criminal Court that has the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the International Court of Arbitration which settles matters regarding trade and the International Court of Justice (ICJ,) which settles matters relating to border issues that may involve land and maritime border issues.
I would not go into details about the Kenya-Somalia maritime border issue that was attempted for a resolution in about 2009, 2014 and eventually, Somalia sued Kenya in the International Court of Justice in 2021, where a verdict was reached, an issue relating to an oil rich area that both countries claimed ownership. That dispute resulted in skirmishes to which many people were killed, forcing some Somalians to leave Kenya, which also caused Kenyan Relators and merchants huge sums of money.
What I am insinuating is that we can resolve this dispute either through those ADR methods, which was adopted in this case, where our Minister of Foreign Affairs and a delegation went to Guinea to negotiate the release, supported by dignitaries from both the MANO River Union and ECOWAS. We cannot be fighting for what should benefit both countries and her people, especially those residents of the border areas.
I am taking this initiative because haven read your responses here and other online discussions, and haven listened to many television interviews, including AYV, I have realized that certain issues stand-out as matters of concern to Sierra Leoneans. Concerns about the arrest that is seen as a Guinean aggression or intimidation of our nation, Sierra Leone. I am of the objective stance that such a concern requires clarification to entrench the felicitation that has existed between the two sister-nations, dating back in precolonial period.
In layman views, the Guinean army’s arrest of Sierra Leonean soldiers is perceived as weakness of Sierra Leone leadership and unlawful or show of aggression by the Guinean army. On the contrary, neither the Guinean army nor the Sierra Leonean army were weak nor aggressive but trained personnel who showed great professionalism in this incident and I say bravo to both of them.
The Sierra Leonean army showed courage and discipline where they never resisted nor put up a fight to avoid a war or skirmishes between the two countries. It showed that they were not carried away by ego but the principles of professionalism and disciplined conflict aversion and professional conduct to surrender, knowing that there are legal and diplomatic methods that the military is responsible to uphold and promote.
The same goes for the Guinean soldiers, who also showed their level of professional acumen, by following the five steps of resolving alleged border encroachment in a demarche or the required actions to take where International Border encroachment is suspected. These actions involve,
1. Detection and Monitoring
2. Verification and Identification
3. Warning and Deterrence
4. Apprehension and Escort
5. Reporting and Diplomacy
6. Marche
The initial television reporting I listened to on February 23rd, 2024, though not sure of the accuracy, the Reporter stated that the presence of Sierra Leonean Soldiers were reported to the Chief of Koudaya, in the Faranah Prefacteur. The chief went to the location, where the Sierra Leonean army was said to have built tent and raised in flag. Him and the soldiers who heard the report went to the location to investigate. They reported their findings to Faranah, resulting in the dispatch of soldiers from I believe, Kindiya. (Detection and Monitoring.)
When Guinean Military personnel arrived from Kindia and Faranah, they warned the Sierra Leoneans of encroachment in 1.4 Kilometers into Guinea and asked them to leave. (Warning and Deterrence.)
Knowing that they did not have the diplomatic authority to determine the judicial and diplomatic procedures required to settle the affair, they were obligated to apprehend the soldiers and take them to authorities who had the mandate to deal with the affair. It is customary in police and military procedures, especially in advanced world, and in most African countries, that a suspect be taken to custody while presumed innocent until proven guilty. This was the same procedure. This procedure is conducted for the safety of arrested people so that, had the military or the Arresting Oficer/s not taken the step to arrest the 16 Sierra Leonean personnel, had anything criminal happened to the soldiers or had the arrested officers done anything fatal, the arresting officers would be held accountable for such a crime and negligence. The Guineans followed the correct procedure by handing the sixteen soldiers to the Judicial authorities for investigation, who may have reported to the Sierra Leonean Embassy in Guinea, who in turn, informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, leading to a delegation to Conakry and the eventual release of the 16 personnel.
In addition, let also emphasize that the Sierra Leonean authorities and Guinean authorities are following the right African traditional practice by adopting a family resolution instead of involving a case with the ICC, knowing that family issues must be resolved within the family circle first before involving the police or outsiders.
I hope this has shed light on what transpired. Let us endeavor to share this information anywhere we find a Sierra Leonean or Guinean who is of the notion that the arrest of the sixteen soldiers was intimidation or weakness of Sierra Leonean government.
Yhank you for reading.
