Reality TV Star and Fitness Coach, Hawa Hunt has confirmed her infection with the Mpox virus weeks after she was released from prison.

The Reality TV Star said she is grateful she is not living with her children as she confirmed her illness.

“I am glad I did not go and hug my kids and share such virus with them. I would have felt horrible,” she said.

She also pleaded with all those she’s been in contact with to do screening for the virus.

Mpox is spread through close interactions with infected individuals or animals. This includes direct contact with lesions, scabs, or bodily fluids, as well as exposure to contaminated materials.

One health expert said to us that they are worried about this recent development considering Hunt was just released from an overcrowded prison.

“It could be that she got infected in prison and if that’s the case, it could be a crisis there,” the expert warned. The health expert warned that the government should test inmates to prevent the spread of the virus.

Sierra Leone first confirmed an Mpox outbreak on January 13, 2025. The West African country has now recorded over 20 cases with new cases being confirmed in the densely populated Western Area. The surge in the number of cases forced the government to declare a health emergency in January.

In February this year, the West African nation received over 61,000 doses of Mpox vaccines for children over 12 and adults.

Sierra Leone is among 12 countries in the African region to confirm the virus.

Originally called Monkey Pox, the virus was first detected in 1958 in a lab in Copenhagen, Denmark. The first human case was, however, reported in D.R. Congo in 1970 from a nine-month-old boy.

Mpox is uncommon in Sierra Leone with prevalence in cases reported coming mostly from Nigeria and D.R. Congo.

Scientists are saying that the virus could have originated from primates like monkeys and African rodents and transferred to humans.

They are saying that Sierra Leone and other infected countries in the sub-region are fighting the Clade II outbreak since 2023.
