The Minister of Health, Austin Demby, has shed light on the importance of reliable transportation for healthcare workers, noting that easier access to work directly improves service delivery and saves lives.

“When health workers can get to work in time without too much hustle for transportation, they can work with freedom and peace of mind and ultimately, save more lives,” Dr Demby stated.

He made these remarks in Bo during an official commissioning ceremony led by President Julius Maada Bio. The event marked the rollout of 10 new staff buses, 450 motorbikes, a mobile garage for vehicle maintenance, and nine utility vehicles to facilitate the movement of health personnel across the country.

The initiative comes amid longstanding transportation challenges faced by healthcare workers, many of whom have been exposed to road accidents and injuries while commuting to work. In some tragic instances, lives have been lost in the process.

According to the government, the newly commissioned fleet is intended to address these risks and improve the welfare of health workers nationwide. President Bio stressed that the move is both a practical intervention and a gesture of appreciation for the dedication and sacrifices of healthcare professionals.

Dr. Demby praised the critical role played by health workers, describing their services as “priceless,” and reiterated government’s commitment to supporting them. “The services our healthcare workers provide are invaluable. This investment is our way of saying thank you and ensuring they can carry out their duties with dignity and safety,” he said.

The development is expected to significantly ease daily commuting challenges, eliminating the need for long waits and struggles for public transportation, and allowing health workers to focus fully on delivering essential services.

The commissioning ceremony in Bo marks a major step in the government’s broader efforts to strengthen the healthcare system and improve working conditions for frontline personnel across Sierra Leone.
