Hon. Emanuel Saidu Conteh, a member of Sierra Leone’s parliament, has expressed gratitude to citizens, medical staff, and supporters after surviving an alleged assassination attempt that left him hospitalized with severe injuries.
The attack occurred on November 29, 2024, at his office in Congo Cross, Freetown.
Speaking from recovery, Hon. Conteh described the incident as a “horrendous assassination attempt” that resulted in stab wounds and other injuries, leading to his weeks-long stay in the intensive care unit at Connaught Hospital. Despite social media reports claiming his death, the MP confirmed his steady recovery, thanking God for his survival.
“I lift up my eyes and put my trust in God. What He cannot do does not exist,” Conteh said.
Conteh extended his appreciation to the medical team at Connaught Hospital, praising their professionalism during his recovery. He also commended his family for their unwavering support and expressed gratitude to the Sierra Leone Police for assigning him armed protection during his hospital stay.
The MP called for justice, urging authorities to ensure a thorough investigation into the attack. “I implore the police not to relent in bringing the perpetrators of this attack to justice. It is my conviction that justice will be served,” he stated.
Support from the public has been overwhelming, Conteh noted, acknowledging calls, messages, and visits from friends, constituents, and party stalwarts in the All People’s Congress (APC).
“I am deeply moved by the solidarity and courage shown by so many during this trying time. It has left a lasting impression on me that if God is for you, no one can be against you,” he added.
Conteh also thanked journalists and bloggers for shedding light on the attack, describing their coverage as a vital defense of civil society.
As he continues his recovery, the MP remains optimistic about the future and expressed hope for a prosperous 2025 for all Sierra Leoneans.
Assasination attempt at his office. A few months ago, cars were getting stolen out of Youyi building. What kind of lax security is this? It is a major sign of our backwardness. We know there are people who get their daily bread by begging ministers and officials at Youyi. Can we stop all this? Parliament, Youyi and other such buildings should be secure environments. While citizens should be able to visit parliament, no one should be able to get in with a weapon for God’s sake. Remove all the sellers, so these places stop looking like a market, and have security in place for those visiting, however, stop the dregman dem.
