Dr. Ibrahim Bangura, a flagbearer aspirant within the opposition All People’s Congress (APC), has strongly condemned the recent arrest and detention of the party’s Secretary General, Lansana Dumbuya, describing it as an erosion of democratic freedoms.

The detention, which occurred earlier this week at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters, follows controversial remarks made by Mr. Dumbuya during a large-scale APC rally at the Attuga Mini Stadium. Police reportedly questioned the Secretary General over political chants and statements directed at President Julius Maada Bio, which some critics labeled as inflammatory.

In a statement, Dr. Bangura expressed “deep concern” over the police action, characterizing it as a potential threat to the nation’s democratic health. He noted that the strength of Sierra Leone’s democracy is measured by its ability to “tolerate dissent, protect political pluralism, and uphold the rule of law.”

“I condemn this action and I am actively engaging with party leadership and fellow flagbearer aspirants to secure his immediate release,” Dr. Bangura stated.

He further emphasized that the timing of the arrest is particularly sensitive, as the country navigates a “critical juncture” involving upcoming electoral cycles and proposed constitutional reforms.

The flagbearer aspirant urged state authorities to exercise restraint and respect due process, arguing that the protection of democratic freedoms transcends partisan politics.

“Safeguarding democratic freedoms is not a partisan issue; it is a national responsibility,” Bangura added. “I urge the relevant authorities to… demonstrate commitment to the democratic values that Sierra Leoneans have worked hard to build and preserve.”

The investigation into Mr. Dumbuya stems from a Monday meeting where supporters were led in chants challenging the legitimacy of the 2023 presidential election results. The Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) has already imposed a fine of NLe350,000 on the APC, citing “incitement” related to the event.

While Mr. Dumbuya was released from custody late Thursday afternoon following a night in detention, the Sierra Leone Police have not yet confirmed whether formal charges will be filed.

Dr. Bangura’s intervention joins a growing chorus of APC leaders, including Members of Parliament who recently threatened a legislative boycott, calling for an end to what they describe as the “criminalization of political speech.”
