In a significant show of support for Sierra Leone’s development efforts, the Regional Director of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), along with leaders from several prominent global energy agencies, paid a courtesy call on President Julius Maada Bio at State House.
The delegation, which included key figures from international organizations such as the Global Energy Alliance for Peace and People (GEAPP), Sustainable Energy for All, the Danish Energy Agency, and the International Atomic Energy Agency, came to express their commitment to supporting Sierra Leone’s energy, agricultural, and climate initiatives
Hon. Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkela, the Chairman of Sierra Leone’s Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy, and Food Security, introduced the delegation to the President.
Dr. Yumkela acknowledged President Bio’s leadership in pushing forward the country’s Energy Transition Plan and Green Growth agenda, which focuses on sustainable energy access and fostering a resilient agricultural system.
Mr. Bernard Mwinyel Hien, IFAD’s Regional Director for West and Central Africa, led the delegation’s remarks, praising President Bio for his unwavering dedication to renewable energy and climate action.
He highlighted the importance of the partnership between Sierra Leone and global development organizations in tackling issues such as hunger, energy access, and food security, particularly in Africa.
He stated, “Your government’s commitment to food security and sustainable energy is exemplary. We are proud to support your vision and to help bring it to fruition.”
In his response, President Bio expressed his gratitude for the continued support from global partners and reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to sustainable development.
He underscored the critical link between energy, climate change, and agriculture in achieving food security. The President shared his vision of boosting national agricultural capacity through the flagship Feed Salone program, emphasizing the role of sustainable energy in ensuring food security amidst climate challenges.
President Bio reflected on the complexities of integrating energy, agriculture, and climate change solutions but expressed optimism, citing the input from experts during the launch of the Energy Transition Plan and Green Growth.
He stressed the importance of increasing productivity and involving the country’s youthful population in climate-smart farming initiatives. “I want to feed my country, reduce the cost of importation, and engage our youth in sustainable agricultural practices,” he declared.
The meeting ended with a commitment to continued collaboration between Sierra Leone and its international partners, with the President expressing his appreciation for their ongoing support.
As a small nation striving for progress, Sierra Leone is determined to leverage global partnerships to accelerate its development goals, particularly in the areas of energy, agriculture, and climate change.
