The Sierra Leone Police (SLP), led by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mr. William Fayia Sellu and the Executive Management Board (EMB), has on Saturday, April 4, 2026, joined forces with other security agencies to undertake a large-scale cleaning exercise across key areas of Freetown.
The exercise, which covered a stretch from Jui to Goderich, focused on clearing waste from streets and drainages as part of efforts to promote a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment for residents of the capital.
During the exercise, IGP Sellu said ongoing reforms within the security sector have necessitated a more proactive approach, including the involvement of police personnel in sanitation activities, an intervention he noted has been widely welcomed by the public.

He acknowledged that sanitation is not traditionally within the mandate of the police, but stressed that the current situation requires urgent and collective action.
He stated that, given the prevailing circumstances, they cannot wait for the city to be overwhelmed by filth, adding that the initiative forms part of a broader effort to take timely action and salvage the situation.
The IGP reaffirmed the commitment of the SLP and its partners to supporting efforts aimed at maintaining cleanliness across the city, particularly in areas where responsible authorities may be overstretched. He added that the broader objective is to serve Sierra Leone.
He assured that the SLP will sustain collaboration with key stakeholders to conduct similar exercises on a fortnightly basis.

He called on the Freetown City Council (FCC) to strictly enforce its bye-laws, especially against individuals who indiscriminately dispose of waste in streets and drainage. The clean-up campaign is expected to continue as a pilot initiative, with plans for sustained implementation.
