The International Organization for Migration (IOM) successfully repatriated 148 Sierra Leonean migrants stranded in Niger, as part of its Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) program. The group, comprising 104 women and 44 men, arrived safely in Sierra Leone yesterday.
The AVRR program aims to provide humane and sustainable support for migrants unable to remain in host countries and wish to return to their countries of origin. This latest effort underscores IOM’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by vulnerable migrants.
In a statement, IOM officials emphasized the significance of reintegration support, noting that efforts will be made to help the returnees rebuild their lives in Sierra Leone. The organization has continued to work closely with national authorities to ensure a smooth transition for those affected.
Such initiatives are critical amid rising migration pressures in the region, with many individuals facing harsh conditions and limited options in transit countries like Niger.
