On Friday, February 21, 2025, Mr. Saa Kpulun, the Chairman of the Independent Police Complaint Board (IPCB), visited the Police Headquarters on George Street in Freetown to meet with Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mr. William Fayia Sellu.
The visit was an opportunity for both leaders to discuss how they can work together to strengthen the police force and improve accountability.
IGP Sellu welcomed Mr. Kpulun and congratulated him on his new position. He expressed his hope that their collaboration would help move the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) forward in a positive direction. During their conversation, IGP Sellu spoke about the importance of discipline within the SLP and assured Mr. Kpulun that any cases of misconduct or violations would be handled seriously. “Anyone who abuses their power will face the consequences,” IGP Sellu said, making it clear that the police force is committed to maintaining its integrity.
The IGP also discussed the structure of the police force, highlighting that the SLP is divided into six regions, each managed by a coordinator who oversees the Complaint Discipline and Internal Investigations Department (CDIID). These coordinators are responsible for monitoring police conduct and ensuring that officers are held accountable.
Additionally, IGP Sellu talked about the steps being taken to improve the SLP, including reducing the use of firearms during public order operations to minimize harm. He mentioned that he looks forward to working closely with the IPCB to support these reforms. “We are committed to being as open and cooperative as possible,” he said, inviting Chairman Kpulun to attend an upcoming Executive Management Board meeting to discuss further collaboration.
In response, Chairman Kpulun thanked the IGP for his leadership and commitment to improving the SLP. He expressed confidence in the potential for a productive working relationship between the IPCB and the police. “This visit is an important step in strengthening the ties between our institutions,” Kpulun said.
The meeting ended with a group photo, symbolizing the partnership and shared goals of both institutions moving forward.
