Vice President of Sierra Leone, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, has expressed deep satisfaction following the recent approval of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact for Sierra Leone. He described this approval as one of the largest MCC Compacts in the region.

In a Twitter post, Dr. Jalloh stated, “I am extremely pleased that today Sierra Leone was approved by the MCC Board for one of the largest Compacts in the region. This is a momentous occasion and a tangible step towards transforming Sierra Leone’s energy sector and ensuring affordable power. It will accelerate private sector development and sustainable economic growth.”

The MCC’s Board of Directors, during its quarterly meeting on Wednesday, June 26, approved a USD 480 million Energy Compact for Sierra Leone. This makes it the largest per capita investment in the subregion.

The MCC had published on November 4, 2022, that Sierra Leone passed 11 out of the 20 indicators, marking its fourth consecutive pass and positioning the country favorably for the development of the Compact.

The journey to this milestone began on January 25, 2021, when Vice President Jalloh, who has been overseeing the MCC process from the Threshold level to the Compact stage, led a delegation to Senegal. The team, including Cabinet Ministers, the Financial Secretary, and the CEO of MCC Sierra Leone, aimed to learn from Senegal’s successful Compact development process. They focused on understanding the analysis and consultation phases, particularly the root cause analysis that prioritized areas in the energy sector.

The approval of this Compact is expected to significantly impact Sierra Leone’s energy infrastructure, promoting private sector growth and sustainable economic development.
