Sierra Leone’s media fraternity is mourning the loss of veteran radio presenter James Taiwo Collen, a former host at Voice of the Handicap (VOH) 96.2 FM, whose fearless voice once shaped public conversations on social, political, and economic issues.

Collen, fondly remembered by many for his bold commentaries and charismatic on-air presence, passed away this week. His death marks the end of an era for listeners who grew up tuning in to the iconic trio of James Taiwo Collen, MB Attila, and Pasco—a team that gained both popularity and respect during the administrations of former Presidents Ahmad Tejan Kabbah and Ernest Bai Koroma.

Known for their unapologetic approach to national issues, the trio became household names, often challenging the status quo and giving voice to the concerns of ordinary citizens at a time when media courage was both rare and risky. Despite adopting humorous military-style titles such as “Brigadier General”, Collen and his co-hosts were not members of the armed forces; the titles symbolized their commanding presence on the airwaves.

Tributes have poured in from listeners, colleagues, and longtime fans who describe Collen as a patriotic broadcaster, an outspoken advocate for justice, and a pillar of Sierra Leone’s radio history.
