Sierra Leone’s vice president, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh has called for renewed national coordination and unified action in Sierra Leone’s ongoing battle against the deadly Kush epidemic, describing it as a “national emergency” that requires urgent and sustained attention.
Speaking at a high-level stakeholders’ meeting on Thursday at State House, the Vice President commended the collective commitment of government ministries, justice sector leaders, and community representatives engaged in the fight. He emphasized that progress would depend on translating dialogue into concrete, measurable outcomes.
“With your support and collective resolve, we will win this fight,” Dr. Jalloh declared, stressing that discussions must now lead to practical results that impact communities most affected by the drug crisis.
He noted that the presence of His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio and senior government officials underscored the administration’s seriousness about tackling the problem head-on.
The Vice President praised several key figures for their leadership and contributions:
Hon. Alpha Sesay, Esq., Attorney General and Minister of Justice, for intensifying the prosecution of drug-related cases.
Hon. Justice Komba Kamanda, Esq., Chief Justice, for introducing reforms to expedite drug trials.
Hon. Ibrahim Tawa Conteh, Deputy Speaker of Parliament, for Parliament’s readiness to support legislative measures reinforcing the anti-Kush campaign.
Dr. Jalloh also drew attention to the moving testimony of Michael Tamba Komba, a recovering Kush addict, whose story he said exemplified both the human cost of the crisis and the importance of coupling law enforcement with rehabilitation and social reintegration programs.
“We have made progress at each point, but cross-border control and enforcement gaps continue to pose challenges,” he noted, urging stakeholders to strengthen coordination between law enforcement, health, and social institutions.
He further described the meeting as a “turning point”, expressing optimism that it would usher in a new phase of collaboration and accountability in the national effort.
In closing, Dr. Jalloh reaffirmed his faith in President Bio’s leadership and the government’s determination to confront the crisis decisively.
“Your Excellency, I want to assure you that with your leadership and additional directives, we will win this fight,” he concluded confidently.
