Sierra Leone has been unanimously endorsed by ECOWAS for a second mandate on the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) for the 2026–2027 term.
The announcement follows an extraordinary ECOWAS mediation and security council meeting at the ministerial level, presided over by Sierra Leone’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Alhaji Timothy Kabba.
The AUPSC is the continent’s premier council on peace and security, and Sierra Leone’s reappointment underscores the country’s leadership in both the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) 2024–2025 and the AUPSC 2024–2025.
Speaking after the meeting, Minister Kabba expressed gratitude to his ECOWAS counterparts and the entire community of member states for the trust placed in Sierra Leone’s leadership. He also acknowledged the guidance of President Julius Maada Bio, who serves as Chairman of ECOWAS’ Authority of Heads of State and Government, for shaping Sierra Leone’s impactful foreign policy.
Minister Kabba further commended the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the country’s diplomatic missions in Abuja and Addis Ababa, noting their critical role in advancing Sierra Leone’s multilateral diplomatic interests.
