Chief Justice of Sierra Leone, His Lordship Justice Komba Kamanda, has welcomed continued support and collaboration from the United Kingdom to strengthen the country’s justice system and expand access to justice.
Justice Kamanda made the commitment during a courtesy meeting with the British High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, Her Excellency Josephine Gauld, at the Chief Justice’s Chambers in Freetown on Monday, September 15, 2026.
The engagement focused on the priorities of the Judiciary for the 2026/2027 Judicial Year and opportunities for continued cooperation between Sierra Leone and the United Kingdom in advancing the rule of law and improving the administration of justice.
During the meeting, High Commissioner Gauld congratulated Justice Kamanda on the commencement of the new Judicial Year and commended the ongoing reforms within Sierra Leone’s Judiciary.
Discussions also highlighted continued UK support through the UK-Sierra Leone Pro Bono Network, alongside broader areas of cooperation aimed at improving access to justice and strengthening the justice sector.
Justice Kamanda thanked the British High Commissioner for the United Kingdom’s continued support to the Judiciary and for attending the Judicial Thanksgiving Service held on Sunday at St George’s Cathedral in Freetown to mark the beginning of the 2026/2027 Judicial Year.
The Chief Justice welcomed further collaboration with the United Kingdom, particularly on initiatives designed to improve the delivery of justice and make judicial services more accessible to people across the country.
He underscored the importance of strategic partnerships in supporting the continued development of Sierra Leone’s justice institutions and strengthening the administration of justice.
The meeting further reinforced the longstanding cooperation between Sierra Leone and the United Kingdom in promoting the rule of law, access to justice and effective judicial services.
As the Judiciary begins the new Judicial Year, Justice Kamanda’s engagement with the British High Commissioner signals continued efforts to deepen international partnerships in support of judicial reform and the strengthening of Sierra Leone’s justice sector.
