Hon. Dr. Kandeh Yumkella has arrived in New York City to participate in a series of engagements on the margins of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), following a distinguished stop in Banjul, The Gambia, where he was honored with a Lifetime Leadership Award.

As Chairman of Sierra Leone’s Energy Governance Coordination Group (EGCG) and head of President Julius Maada Bio’s Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Food Security (PI-CREF), Dr. Yumkella is slated to speak at and moderate multiple high-level events during UNGA’s High-Level week.

A highlight of his agenda is the side event on Tuesday, September 23, titled “From Compact to Impact”, which will showcase Sierra Leone’s innovative approach to delivering universal energy access at the last mile. This comes ahead of Sierra Leone’s signing of the Mission 300 Compact on September 24, one of the largest energy infrastructure packages in the country’s history, facilitated by the World Bank, African Development Bank, and other global partners.

The initiative aims to provide 300 million Africans with reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity, addressing the continent’s persistent energy poverty.

Dr. Yumkella also spoke at the 4th Annual Unstoppable Africa organized by the Global Africa Business Initiative (GABI). The event convened African and global leaders across sectors to highlight Africa’s dynamic investment and development landscape.

Dr. Yumkella is accompanied by Pete Kaindaneh, Chief Technical Adviser, and Anthony Kamara, Director of Partnerships, Communications, and Outreach from PI-CREF, as Sierra Leone showcases its leadership in energy and climate solutions on the global stage.
