Sierra Leone’s music industry may be on the verge of defining a distinctive global identity following major announcements at the Producers’ Retreat 2026, convened by Entertainment Ambassador Kao Denero.

The retreat, held on Friday, February 13, 2026, at Cacao Resort, brought together a cross-section of industry stakeholders, including music producers, sound engineers, DJs, recording artists, and other creative professionals. The gathering focused on strategies to strengthen Sierra Leone’s music sector and enhance its competitiveness on the international stage.

In his address to participants, Ambassador Kao revealed that he and a selected team of producers had developed and identified two unique musical sounds intended to serve as a foundation for a recognizable Sierra Leonean music identity. While specific details of the sounds were not publicly disclosed, he explained that the broader goal is to create a signature style that audiences worldwide can immediately associate with Sierra Leone.

He referenced how genres such as Amapiano and Afrobeats have become closely linked to South Africa and Nigeria respectively, noting that a clearly defined national sound could similarly elevate Sierra Leone’s presence in global music markets.

According to organizers, the initiative is designed to provide local artists with a stronger creative platform, promote originality, and position the industry for wider international exposure. The retreat also served as a forum for dialogue on collaboration, production standards, branding, and unity within the sector.

Ambassador Kao emphasized that the initiative is intended to move beyond past disagreements within the industry, underscoring the need for collective action in building a sustainable and globally competitive music ecosystem.

Although the Association of Music Producers & Engineers in Sierra Leone (AMPE-SL) did not participate in the retreat, the Office of the Ambassador of Entertainment stated that relevant stakeholders had been consulted in good faith. The office further maintained that the project is inclusive and extends beyond any single organization, aiming instead to develop a collective sound identity reflective of Sierra Leone’s culture, heritage, and aspirations.

The Producers’ Retreat 2026 concluded with participants describing the engagement as constructive and forward-looking. Organizers characterized the event as a significant step toward formalizing a national music identity, fostering international collaborations, and promoting national pride through uniquely defined Sierra Leonean sounds.
