Justice Komba Kamanda, Chief Justice of Sierra Leone, has called on judicial officers to remain steadfast in upholding the principles of justice, fairness, accountability, equity, and the rule of law.
He made these remarks on Thursday, 2nd October 2025, during the official opening of the ECOWAS Court of Justice in Abuja, Nigeria.
Speaking in his capacity as Chairman of the ECOWAS Judicial Council, Chief Justice Kamanda emphasized the significance of the event, noting the longstanding tradition of marking the start of the judicial year with a formal ceremony. He described the day as a moment for reflection and urged judicial officers to renew their commitment to justice and fairness.
“The theme of today’s occasion resonates strongly with the present trends, and the role of the judiciary cannot be overstated,” Chief Justice Kamanda said.
He pledged to work with his colleagues across the region to review and update procedural rules, ensure full implementation of the council’s mandate, and explore the establishment of an appellate court. He also stressed the importance of stronger enforcement of court judgments and closer collaboration between the ECOWAS Court and national judicial councils.
Chief Justice Kamanda further encouraged outreach programs to bring the court’s work closer to citizens, particularly in regional communities, to deepen public understanding of its functions.
He also commended the ECOWAS Court leadership for their recent visit to Sierra Leone, where they engaged legal practitioners to strengthen knowledge of the court’s operations.
Looking ahead, he expressed optimism that the new judicial year would be guided by the principles of justice, equity, and the rule of law.
