The Lawyers’ Society has called for the immediate reversal of the suspension of Hon. Justice A. B. Halloway JSC, urging that his complaints outlined in a letter dated 11th August 2025 be investigated without delay.
The Society noted that Justice Halloway’s suspension, ordered by the Office of the President pending a disciplinary tribunal, was carried out without a stated reason. Prior to the suspension, Justice Halloway had written letters on 11th August and 11th September 2025, raising concerns over the withholding of his statutory allowances and employment benefits, his removal from case panels, and his exclusion from hearings at both the Appellate and Supreme Courts. He argued that these actions had affected his health and those of his family, describing them as a violation of Section 138(3) of the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
The Lawyers’ Society also revealed that it had written to the Hon. Chief Justice on 22nd August and 5th September 2025 requesting a response to Justice Halloway’s complaints but had received no acknowledgment.
In its position, the Society insisted that the Judicial and Legal Service Commission should have heard and considered Justice Halloway’s grievances before any disciplinary action was taken. It emphasized that such consideration is a fundamental right for every judge under the law.
