Magistrate John Manso Fornah of Pademba Road Magistrate Court No. 2 on Wednesday remanded a 36-year-old driver, Tijan Yarjah, over allegations of defrauding a buyer in a fake vehicle sale involving $20,000 (NLe 472,000).
Yarjah faces two criminal charges: Conspiracy to Defraud, contrary to law, and Obtaining Money by False Pretences, contrary to Section 32(1) of the Larceny Act of 1916.
According to court documents, between March 1 and March 17, 2025, at Jones Street, Freetown, Yarjah allegedly conspired with unknown persons to defraud one Reign Kamara by falsely claiming he had two vehicles—a 2014 Jeep Wrangler and a 2014 Lexus—available for sale.
Prosecution led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sorie Conteh called Detective Sergeant Inspector (DSI) Kargbo R. of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) as the third prosecution witness.
DSI Kargbo testified that on May 7, 2025, the complainant reported the matter to the CID. Investigations led to the arrest of the accused on June 1, 2025, by the first prosecution witness. A caution statement was later obtained from the accused in Krio and translated into English by DPC 13846 Ngaujeh T., with the accused confirming its accuracy by affixing his right-hand thumbprint. The statement was marked as Exhibit C1-13, while the charge sheet was tendered as Exhibit D1-2.
During proceedings, Defence Counsel M.S. Saccoh applied for bail, citing the accused’s willingness to cooperate and availability of credible sureties. However, Magistrate Fornah denied the bail application due to the seriousness of the allegations.
Yarjah was remanded at the Male Correctional Centre in Freetown. The matter was adjourned to August 14, 2025, for continuation of the trial.
