The next 50 days are going to be a defining make or break period for the main opposition All Peoples Congress (APC) If the party is to take part in the June 24, 2023 general elections.
According to some EOCWAS protocols on the conduct of national elections in the subregion, the 21-Men Interim Transitional Governance Committee (ITGC) of the APC is expected to have finished the party’s internal lower-level selections and National Delegates Convention (NDC) to elect new national executive officers and the party’s presidential candidate for 2023 by the end of this period. Failing to do so could jeopardize the party’s chances of participating in the multi-tier elections next year.
Recall that the 24th of January 2023 was the deadline set by the Chairman of the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC) for the party to complete all internal lower-level elections. The NDC, following internal strife within the ITGC, has since resolved their differences and is now acting as one independent force.
The party is presently on pace to achieve all deadlines, norms, and criteria set by the electoral stakeholder for the APC to be eligible to run in next year’s elections, according to Alfred Peter Conteh, Chairman of the APC-ITGC, in a recent interview with The Exclusive. He added that the PPRC has approved the ITGC’s creation of a 25-Man Transitional Independent Interim Elections Management Committee (TIIEMC) to oversee the internal elections.
Alfred Peter Conteh further assured the media that all internal elections would be finished by January 19, 2023, adding that the party would join the NDC immediately following the completion of these lower-level elections.
In order to comply with the court’s ruling and establish a new, legitimate membership record for the party, he also disclosed to the press that the party had started a new membership registration drive across the nation.
The chairman of the APC-ITGC further urged his colleagues to make sure they work quickly to implement any court orders precisely.
