Sierra Leone’s Minister of Public Administration and Political Affairs, Amara Kallon, has called for the development of credible and inclusive national data collection tools to strengthen the African Peer Review Mechanism’s (APRM) Governance Index.

Minister Kallon made the appeal during his keynote address at a virtual sensitization session organized by the APRM Continental Secretariat on the voluntary collection of official national data for the Index.

The workshop, hosted by the APRM Continental Secretariat, aimed to foster a better understanding and agreement on the significance of national data in enhancing the Governance Index.

This index is a tool designed to evaluate governance progress across African member states through a more data-driven approach, building upon the APRM’s existing qualitative assessments by incorporating quantitative indicators.

Minister Kallon, who serves as the National Focal Point for APRM, highlighted the critical importance of national ownership, inclusivity, and transparency for the success of the Governance Index. In a post on the ministry’s official Facebook page following the workshop, he emphasized the need for a clear and objective recruitment process for data gathering institutions to ensure the integrity of the data collected.

“I urged for a clear and objective recruitment process for data collection institutions to ensure data integrity, and I highlighted the importance of involving National Statistical institutions in data collection and validation for credibility and reliability,” Minister Kallon stated.

He also reiterated Sierra Leone’s strong support for the APRM and its Continental Secretariat as the nation prepares for its second-generation review. “I concluded by highlighting Sierra Leone’s pride in the APRM Continental Secretariat role, especially ahead of Sierra Leone’s second-generation country review,” he said.

Minister Kallon concluded his address by inviting attendees and member states to the 3rd High-Level Forum on South-South and Triangular Cooperation for Sustainable Development, scheduled to be held in Freetown from May 7–9, 2025.
