The Ministry of Health (MoH) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) in Rwanda to provide leadership and management training for healthcare professionals in Sierra Leone.

Under the agreement, more than 100 medical practitioners are expected to benefit from a five-year hospital leadership training programme that is internationally recognised. The programme is designed to strengthen hospital leadership, improve governance structures, and enhance nationwide health systems management, including surgical services.

The MOU was signed following a high-level visit to Rwanda by a delegation from the Ministry of Health, led by the Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Clinical Services, Dr. Mustapha Kabba. The visit enabled both institutions to explore areas of collaboration and align the training programme with Sierra Leone’s health sector priorities.

Signing on behalf of the Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, Dr. Kabba stated that the partnership will contribute to building the capacity of healthcare workers through structured skills transfer, shared learning, mentorship, and practical exposure to effective hospital governance, financing, and service delivery models. He noted that these efforts are intended to complement ongoing health sector reforms in the country.

Officials say the initiative forms part of broader government efforts to strengthen institutional capacity within the health sector and to improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare delivery across Sierra Leone.

The partnership with UGHE is expected to support the development of a new cadre of hospital leaders equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to manage complex health systems and respond to evolving healthcare challenges.
