The Ministry of Agriculture has formally requested a budget allocation of LE 103.3 billion from the Ministry of Finance to advance the government’s flagship “Feed Salone” initiative.

The program, launched by President Julius Maada Bio, aims to transform Sierra Leone’s agriculture sector, achieve food sovereignty, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth.

During the budget presentation, Professor Abdulai Jalloh, the Chief Agriculturist, highlighted the ministry’s commitment to promoting sustainable and diversified food production. He emphasized that the “Feed Salone” program is crucial for reducing hunger, increasing local food production, and lessening the countryโ€™s dependence on food imports.

“President Julius Maada Bio’s ‘Feed Salone’ flagship programme will boost agriculture productivity, fuel inclusive growth, and build a resilient food system,” said Prof. Jalloh. He also outlined key achievements, including the cultivation of over 23.4 million hectares, the development of 4,500 hectares of irrigation infrastructure, and the distribution of vital agricultural equipment across the country.

In the livestock sector, the ministry reported the vaccination of 158,858 goats and sheep across 15 agricultural districts, alongside the training of 50 tractor operators and mechanics. Looking ahead, the ministry’s 2025 targets include the establishment of two cluster hubs, the procurement of 85 power tillers and 18 tractors for rice cultivation, and the production of key crops such as maize and soya beans to support poultry production.

The requested funds, according to Prof. Jalloh, are essential to achieving these goals and ensuring the success of the “Feed Salone” program.
