Hon. Abdul Karim Kamara, a Member of Parliament serving on the Water and Sanitation Oversight Committee, has voiced concern about ongoing human activities affecting the Freetown Peninsula Greenbelt.
Addressing issues related to access to water and sanitation, Hon. Kamara noted that encroachment into the Greenbelt, particularly around water catchment areas, could pose serious risks to nearby communities. He warned that if the situation is not addressed, it may lead to severe environmental consequences.
The MP called on government authorities to take stronger measures to protect the Greenbelt and prevent further degradation of this critical area. He added that unchecked human activities could increase the likelihood of disasters similar to, or worse than, the 2017 mudslide in Matormeh.
The Freetown Peninsula Greenbelt is a key ecological zone that serves as a water source for many residents and provides natural protection against erosion and flooding. Concerns over its preservation have been raised by environmental groups and policymakers in recent years.
