In response to the alarming rise in Mpox cases in Sierra Leone, the West African Health Organisation through the Economic Community of West African States ECOWAS Regional Centre for Surveillance and Disease Control has deployed a field team to support national efforts by strengthening coordination, conducting an in-depth assessment of the situation, and mobilising necessary resources.
This intervention comes amid a rapid and concerning surge in confirmed Mpox cases, with Sierra Leone now accounting for over 90% of reported infections in the region in 2025. In line with its mandate, ECOWAS promptly activated its regional response network, dispatching a multidisciplinary team comprising epidemiologists, laboratory specialists, and logisticians. The mission aims to reinforce control measures, support response operations, and define medium to long-term strategies for disease containment.
As part of regional coordination efforts, ECOWAS is expected to work closely with local actors and neighboring countries. These efforts aim to strengthen cross-border surveillance and coordinated response measures to contain the spread of Mpox across the region.
ECOWAS said that the decision is a commitment to supporting Sierra Leone in this health crisis and promised to mobilise all its expertise and resources to curb the progression of Mpox and protect the health of populations in the sub-region.
