Members of Parliament of Sierra Leone’s main opposition party, the All Peoples Congress (APC) have endorsed Dr. Samura Mathew Wilson Kamara to serve as the presidential candidate for the party in June’s general elections.
The endorsement of the Samura Kamara, who led the party at the 2018 presidential election took place at the Well of Parliament on Wednesday 8 February 2023.
Chairing the endorsement ceremony, Hon. Salieu O. Sesay aka SOS informed the gathering that they as MPs have always believed in Dr. Samura Kamara, underscoring, that since he lost the 2018 presidential election, Dr. Samura Kamara has remained steadfast and focused and has lived up to the expectations of party members and supporters who believe that he is second to none in the flagbearer race.
He said Dr. Samura Kamara is, so far, the most popular candidate and that it is against that backdrop that they as MPs have thought it fit to endorse him for the presidential flagbearer bid.
According to Hon. SOS, the decision taken to endorse Dr. Samura Kamara resonates with the entire constituencies they represent in the country.
Addressing the MPs, Dr. Samura Kamara stated that the prosperity of APC is assured, adding that they are one family.
By their positions, he said, they are all servants and that they are not to be served as, according to him, they are elected to serve the people.
He said the journey to 2023 is not as straightforward as people, may think it is. He,, therefore called on everyone to come on board and fight the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) led government, head-on. The APC, he said, remains red and ready for the battle ahead and that as MPs, they have a big role to play.
On his part, the leader of the opposition APC in Parliament, Hon. Chernor Maju Bah aka Chericoco said that the endorsement by MPs is a real manifestation of true democracy, adding that the MPs were never forced to do a such an endorsement.
He said, he had earlier endorsed Dr. Samura Kamara in Kambia, and he did that out of a strong conviction as, according to him, Dr. Samura Kamara has all it takes to catapult Sierra Leone from where it left in 2017 to another level that will be an envy to many.
In his contribution, Hon. Abdul Karim Kamara from Kambia District said the country is currently faced with an acute economic problems which cannot be fixed by an old soldier but by an economist like Dr. Samura Kamara.
Other MPs including Hon. Aaron Aruna Koroma from Tonkolili District, Hon. Lahai Marah from Falaba District and Hon. Rosaline Smith expressed similar sentiments.
