The Mano River Union (MRU) Secretariat has called for calm and diplomatic engagement following recent developments in the border area between Sierra Leone and Guinea.
In a press release issued on February 25, 2026, in Freetown, the Secretariat said it had taken note of the situation unfolding in the border communities of Falaba District in Sierra Leone and Forécariah Prefecture in Guinea. The regional body urged both countries to exercise restraint and rely on established bilateral mechanisms to address the matter peacefully.
According to the statement, the call is in line with Article 15 of the MRU Protocol on Peace, Security and Defence, which mandates the Secretariat to take appropriate steps to establish facts on the ground and promote dialogue among Member States. The Secretariat disclosed that engagements are ongoing with relevant local authorities and community stakeholders in the affected areas to ensure clarity and prevent escalation.
It further stated that it remains in contact with the governments of both countries, encouraging them to resolve concerns through diplomatic channels in a spirit of cooperation. The Secretariat reaffirmed its readiness to support efforts aimed at de-escalation and the preservation of cordial relations between the two countries.
Reiterating its commitment to regional stability, the MRU pledged continued support to Member States in addressing cross-border issues through dialogue, confidence-building measures, and collaborative solutions.
